President, Executive Director

Stop Our Shootings
Post Office Box 16206
Irvine, CA 92623-6206

Dear John:

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to work with our office regarding firearm saftey issues. We appreciate your willingness to assist us by providing us with the "911" tape recording associated with the accidental shooting of your daughter. The tape recording is extremely moving and we intend to use excerpts from that tape to develop one of our firearm sare storage public service announcements.

Regarding safe storage, the Department of Justice has taken many steps to encourage the safe storage of firearms. These efforts include supporting Senate Bill 9 (Soto) which expanded the safe storage laws, developing safe storage public service campaigns, providing training to firearms dealers, law enforcement and the public, and in providing firearm storage lock boxes to our special agents and requiring that they store firearms in these lock boxes when they are not in official use. We feel law enforcement has a role in setting the standard as it relates to firearm safety in that the public so often turns to law enforcement expertise surronding firearms.

Again, thank you for the materials you provided our office concerning safe storage. I look forward to improving the safety of Californians by encouraging safe storage of firearms.

Sincerely,
RANDY ROSSI, Director
Firearms Division

For: BILL LOCKYER
Attorney General
