GARDEN GROVE (CNS) - Two boys and a girl suffered minor ricochet wounds in Garden Grove today when another child found a 12-gauge shotgun near their apartment complex and fired it into the ground, police said.
At 4:20 p.m., officers were sent to 12662 Morningside Ave. on a report of "unknown trouble," said Garden Grove police Sgt. Mike Handfield. A 5-year-old boy found the weapon laying "in an area south of the apartment complex," Handfield said.
He fired it into the ground, and the ricocheting bird shot struck two boys, ages 6 and 7, and a girl, 4, nearby, police said. The children were taken to UCI Medical Center fot treatment, Handfield said.
One of the boys was struck in the leg, Handfield said, and the other boy was hit in one of his extremities. The girl apparently suffered abrasions, he said. Police took photographs of the weapon but were still examining it this evening, he said.
"We have no idea who owns it," Handfield said.
