Student charged with bringing handgun to school

LILLINGTON, N.C. (AP) -- A sophomore who brought a handgun and bullets to school to trade for a pair of shoes has been charged with a felony, police said.

Police say the 15-year-old boy brought the gun to Western Harnett High School on Monday. Principal Jackie Samuels said a sheriff's deputy stationed at the school found out about the gun from another student.

The deputy took the boy out of class Monday and questioned him. The boy admitted having the gun in his backpack, along with a magazine containing six .22-caliber bullets and an additional 22 bullets, Maj. Steve West said.

Authorities believe the gun belongs to one of the boy's relatives.

The boy was arrested and charged with felony possession of a firearm on school grounds. Samuels said the student has also been suspended for one year.

The boy told police he wanted to trade the gun for shoes. Samuels said he believes a trade was the boy's only intention. He has had no previous discipline problems, and his mother said he had talked about buying the shoes, Samuels said.
