A distraught mother had no answers Sunday for why someone fatally shot her 12-year-old son during a birthday party at her northeast Houston house.
Police said Edwin Ramos was shot in the back about 11:15 p.m. Saturday in the 1700 block of Watkin Way and was later pronounced dead at Ben Taub General Hospital.
There were about 50 teen-agers at the house for a birthday party for the victim's older brother when an argument erupted among several of the guests and turned into a fight, police said.
One of the teens pulled a pistol. That individual then got into a vehicle and began firing shots as it pulled away, police said. One of the bullets struck Edwin.
Mirna Ramos, 40, said the culprits were not invited to the party. They just showed up, she said.
She said she doesn't understand why anyone would shoot her son, a sixth-grader at Woodland Acres who was "a good boy and liked by everybody."
"My son is just a little boy," she said.
Ramos said her son's school principal and teachers came to her house when they learned of the shooting. "Everybody loved him," she said.
Ramos said she has not heard from police about the investigation's progress.
The suspect was described as a Hispanic male who left in a vehicle with three other Hispanic males.
